Though I work and teach primarily in the realm of imagery,
my teaching philosophy embraces tactile learning experiences.
My background in traditional sculpture and performance
has strongly influenced my teaching of construction
and design. These elements are strong threads throughout
my work and are documented in traditional and digital
photography and multimedia artworks. This devotion to
hands-on experience with actual materials is juxtaposed
with computer technologies that remove one from direct
interaction with the physical world and into the realm
of representation. Combining traditional and digital
media maximizes the learning experience, allowing for
a rich critical theory approach to art, technology and
society.
I encourage my students to break through social boundaries by deconstructing their own views and global values. I structure my teaching style in such a way that these explorations are done creatively through traditional and experimental media and with sufficient leeway for the unpredictable to occur in students' work. I also challenge students, encouraging them to try new things and helping them to gain independence in their work. I make sure they know what has come before them on a historical and theoretical level and how contemporary artists and designers are combining traditional media with digital multimedia. This creative teaching process in turn opens up the boundaries of traditional media by combining them with new technologies to create new possibilities in art and design.
